Winton, originally of the family Wertheim, was dubbed the British Schindler by the UK Press after he rescued 669 children, predominantly of Jewish origin, from Czechoslovakia on the eve of World War II. This movement later became known as the Czech Kindertransport, as Winton both removed the children from harm and found them new homes.
